The World's Deadliest Snipers

In warfare, while the infantry moves and holds ground, it’s the snipers who operate in small teams and move ahead to inflict damage on the enemy. Snipers aren’t a new phenomena either. They have been used by armies across the globe as battlefield instruments, set to play a crucial role in wars. Here are 14 of the deadliest who have taken to the battlefield and left a mark on the enemy’s psyche.

1. Simo Hayha, 505 kills, Finland

Simo Hayha was leading a peaceful life in rural Finland after having completed his compulsory training in the Finnish Army for a year. He was called up to serve the nation when the Soviet Union invaded Finland in 1939. Nicknamed ‘The White Death’ and all of 5’3” tall, he racked up 505 confirmed kills using his M/28-30 rifle. When the Soviets found out that their soldiers were being killed, they initially thought that since it was war, casualties were a given. But when they got wind of The White Death, they sent a counter sniper, who was killed by Hayha. In return, the Soviets sent in more snipers, who never returned. Next, they sent in a whole battalion, and as you can guess, suffered a huge number of casualties. The soviets finally sent in the artillery to bomb him to death, but to no avail.

The reason Hayha was so successful at hunting down the enemy was his white camouflage, that he wore and hid in the snow with, despite the terrible winters. So dedicated was he that he stayed in position without moving with snow in his mouth so that his breath didn’t condense and give away his position. He also preferred to use a smaller weapon to suit his compact frame and used the iron sights on his gun rather than a scope so that he couldn’t be spotted. He was hit in the jaw by a stray bullet and was later picked up by a fellow soldier. He didn’t die, and regained consciousness only on the 13th day. By then peace had been declared and his tally remained at 505.

2. Ivan Sidorenko, 500 plus kills, Soviet Union

A school dropout, as a young officer Sidorenko fought in the Battle of Moscow. The mortar team he was assigned to didn’t seem exciting enough, so he taught himself to snipe. One by one he hunted the German soldiers from his Mosin-Nagant rifle. In retaliation, the Germans too posted their snipers in Sidorenko’s area, but failed to kill him. So accurate and effective was he that his superiors called him to train more snipers. The result was a complete annihilation of the Germans at the 1st Baltic Front.

3. Fyodor Okhlopkov, 429, Soviet Union

Another Soviet sniper who fought in World War 2, he first started out as a machine-gunner, then became a commander of a sub-machine gun group, and in October 1942 became a sniper. Since the contributions of indigenous population were not recognised in early Soviet days, his 429 kills were only acknowledged 20 years after the war was over. A military newspaper in Russia wrote about him, “He has the keen eye of a hunter, the hard hand of a miner, and a big, warm heart.”

4. Francis Pegahmagabow, 378 kills, Canada

A Canadian soldier of native American origin, he was thrice awarded the military medal and was seriously wounded twice while fighting the Germans in World War I. He killed nearly 400 Germans and was also responsible for the capture of 300 enemy soldiers. But that’s not all. He also ran through enemy fire to get more ammo when his unit was running low at a time when his commanding officer was also awarded medals for running messages through very heavy enemy fire.

5. Lyudmila Pavlichenko, 309 kills, Soviet Union

One of the most prolific female snipers in history, Lyudmila had a torrid time the first time she faced the enemy. She just couldn’t bring herself to kill the German soldiers in her sights. It was only when a soldier next to her was killed that she went all out against the enemy. She killed two enemy soldiers that day. She would later add 307 more to the tally. She also killed 36 enemy snipers including one of whom already amassed 500 kills. After the war ended, she retired and became a historian.

6. Chris Kyle, 255 kills, USA

Famous for his book American Sniper, he is one of the most successful American snipers. His most legendary shot came outside the Sadr City in Afghanistan in 2008 when he spotted an insurgent with a rocket launcher near an Army convoy - 2,100 yards away. That’s more than 2 kms far. He let one loose from his .338 Lapua Magnum rifle to knock the guy dead. Such was his reputation that the enemy nicknamed him 'Al-Shaitan Ramad', or the Devil of Ramadi. Kyle died in 2013 in a shooting range incident along with his friend Chad Littlefield.

7. Vasily Zaytsev, 242 kills, Soviet Union

People only learnt of the guy when they made a movie about him. Jude Law played Vasily Zaytsev in Enemy At The Gates. Before notching up enemy kills in the Battle of Stalingrad, Vasily was a clerk in the Soviet Navy. After reading about the fighting in the city, he volunteered to be on the front lines, serving with the 1047th Rifle Regiment. Between October and January 1943 he had made 242 confirmed kills. A counter sniper operation from the German side was also on, but not to the extent that is shown in the movie. However, in his memoirs, Zaytsev claims that he killed a German sniper, with whom his duel went on for three days, and claimed his scope as  trophy.

8. Zhang Taofang, 214 kills, China

He served in the Chinese Army for only two years during the Korean War and managed to kill no less than 214 enemy soldiers in a span of 32 days! What’s more incredible is the fact that he started with no sniper training and started his stint by firing 12 shots and missing every single one of them and attracting enemy attention. He learnt quickly though and averaged  a massive 6.7 kills per day.

9. Ranjith Premasiri Madalana, 180 kills, Sri Lanka

Not much is known about this Sri Lankan soldier, except that he had 180 confirmed kills against LTTE. He would later be killed by an enemy sniper in 2009.

10. Corporal in British Royal Marines, 173 kills, British

The British Royal Marines won’t release the name of the most prolific of snipers who has notched up 173 kills in Afghanistan. It is said that the actual number of kills may actually be higher. One of the most mind boggling stats is 90 kills in a single day!

11. Adelbert Waldron, 109 kills, USA

One of the most accurate shots, Waldron had the highest number of kills in the Vietnam War. It is said that once he and his fellow soldiers, while riding along the Mekong river, were attacked by an enemy sniper from the shore 900 metres away. While the rest of the soldiers looked hard to spot the sniper, Waldron picked up his rifle and killed the perpetrator sitting on top of a coconut tree with a single shot. That this was done from a moving platform is an incredible feat in itself. By the end of the war, he had amassed some 109 confirmed kills.

12. Carlos Norman Hathcock, 93 kills, USA

One of the most feared American snipers in the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese even put a bounty of $30,000 on his head. In fact, they were so scared of him that they sent out missions just to hunt him down. He once attached a scope to an M2 browning machine gun, and recorded the longest confirmed kill in history (2,500 yards), a record that stood until 2002. He also once scoped an area of operation for days, keeping track of the enemy’s movement before taking out the North Vietnamese army general there. He was a fearless soldier too, pulling out seven soldiers off of a burning track after being hit by an anti-tank mine. He was seriously injured while doing this.

13. Roza Shanina, 59 kills, Soviet Union

She joined the army after her brother was killed in 1941, and in a short career, managed to kill 59 enemy soldiers. She soon rose through the ranks and was awarded Orders of Glory and Medal of Courage. And courageous she was. She was killed while shielding her commanding officer in an artillery attack at the age of 20.

14. Thomas Plunkett, 2 kills, British

Clearly, this Irishman is not on this list because of the number of kills. He’s here because he did something unheard of in his day. In 1809, using a Baker rifle which the British Army trained its soldiers to shoot at a range of 50 metres, Plunkett managed to kill a French General at a range of 600 metres. Given the dubious accuracy of the rifles of the time, it’s an incredible achievement. After shooting the General, Plunkett, not wanting his comrades to think he was plain lucky with the kill, decided to make another shot again before returning to his line. So he reloaded his gun and took aim once again, this time at the major who had come to the General’s aid. This shot also hit its intended target. As you can guess, his fellow soldiers were mighty impressed.

Former News of the World royal editor Clive Goodman hacked the phones of Prince William, Prince Harry and Kate Middleton, jurors heard today.

Goodman, who returned to the witness box after weeks of ill health, was accused of being more heavily involved in phone hacking with private detective Glenn Mulcaire in 2005 and 2006 than was previously heard.

Goodman and Mulcaire were convicted in 2006 of hacking phones in relation to royal aides.

But their activities went further than that, jurors were told.

The then Ms Middleton's phone was hacked 155 times, Prince William 35 times and Prince Harry nine times, the Old Bailey trial heard.

Kate was even hacked on Christmas Day 2005, jurors heard.

The details emerged as Goodman was being cross examined by ex-NotW editor Andy Coulson's lawyer Timothy Langdale QC.

He asked: "I'm going to suggest you had direct contact with Glenn Mulcaire significantly before the time you have told us - that you yourself had been hacking on a much wider scale than you have told this court about."

Goodman said he had not been asked a direct question.

The witness said he had been assured by the Crown Prosecution Service he would not be charged with any more hacking but no-one had asked him.

When presented with a list of hacking victims, he said: "I'm not on trial for hacking," adding: "There has been no intention to deceive you or anybody else in relation to phone hacking."

On his arrest in 2006, Mr Langdale said: "It's the one thing you must have been more worried about than anything else that it would become clear you yourself had been hacking members of the royal family."

Goodman replied: "I was terrified of the whole thing. I was mortified."

Mr Langdale said Kate Middleton, who was to become the Duchess of Cambridge, was first hacked on October 21 2005.

Mr Langdale asked the witness why she had been targeted and if he had tasked Mulcaire to do it.

He replied: "She was a figure of increasing importance around the royal family. There were discussions about her and Prince William marrying, moving in, settling down. She started to receive semi royal status and things were moving on."

Mr Langdale said: "You are telling us Glenn Mulcaire hacked her without any instruction from you? Did you task him to do that?"

He replied: "I do not remember tasking him to do that. It's possible but I do not recall."

He added: "I have been as open and honest about hacking as I can be but nobody has asked me any questions about this before."

Mr Langdale said: "You knew perfectly well you hacked Prince Harry and Prince William didn't you?"

Goodman replied: "Nobody asked me."

He added that often he and Mulcaire hacked the same messages.

Goodman, of Addlestone, Surrey, denies two counts of conspiring with Coulson and others to commit misconduct in public office.

All seven defendants in the trial deny the charges against them.
Earlier, Mr Justice Saunders addressed the jury, saying: "As you know we have been waiting for Mr Goodman to be fit enough to continue to complete his evidence. We have had to wait because he has been ill."

He summarised Goodman's evidence so far for the jury before Mr Langdale began his questioning.

The trial continues.

Little Girl Statue Stands Up to Iconic Wall Street Bull (and Masculinity)

Charging Bull, which is sometimes referred to as the Wall Street Bull or the Bowling Green Bull, is a bronze sculpture that stands in Bowling Green Park in the Financial District in Manhattan, New York City. Originally guerilla art, by Arturo Di Modica, its popularity led to it being a permanent feature.

Description

The 7,100-pound (3,200 kg) sculpture stands 11 feet (3.4 m) tall[1] and measures 16 feet (4.9 m) long. The oversize sculpture depicts a bull, the symbol of aggressive financial optimism and prosperity, leaning back on its haunches and with its head lowered as if ready to charge. The sculpture is both a popular tourist destination which draws thousands of people a day, as well as "one of the most iconic images of New York" and a "Wall Street icon" symbolizing Wall Street and the Financial District.

A poster showing a ballerina on the Charging Bull to promote the Occupy Wall Street movement
In Outdoor Monuments of Manhattan: A Historical Guide, Dianne Durante describes the sculpture:

The Bull's head is lowered, its nostrils flare, and its wickedly long, sharp horns are ready to gore; it's an angry, dangerous beast. The muscular body twists to one side, and the tail is curved like a lash: the Bull is also energetic and in motion.

The bronze color and hard, metallic texture of the sculpture's surface emphasises the brute force of the creature. The work was designed and placed so that viewers could walk around it, which also suggests the creature's own movement is unrestricted — a point reinforced by the twisting posture of the bull's body, according to Durante.

Charging Bull, then, shows an aggressive or even belligerent force on the move, but unpredictably.t's not far-fetched to say the theme is the energy, strength, and unpredictability of the stock market."

Di Modica told the New York Daily News in 1998:

That bull is one of an edition of five. … I'm hoping the other four will be going to cities all over the world, whenever somebody buys them.

In 2010, a similar Charging Bull sculpted by Di Modica, which looks "younger" and "stronger," was installed in Shanghai, called Bund Bull. In 2012 one was placed on Het Beursplein in Amsterdam.

As many American women prepare to draw attention to their role in the workplace, a Wall Street firm on Tuesday put up a statue of a girl in front of Lower Manhattan's well-known bronze charging bull, as if to fearlessly stare it down.

Placing the diminutive, grade school-aged girl in front of the massive bull on the eve of International Women's Day was a way of calling attention to the lack of gender diversity on corporate boards and the pay gap of women working in financial services, a spokeswoman for State Street Global Advisors said.

"A lot of people talk about gender diversity, but we really felt we had to take it to a broader level," said Anne McNally, whose firm is an investment management subsidiary of State Street Corp.

In conjunction with International Women's Day on Wednesday, many American women are planning to stay home from work, which has led some schools to cancel classes.

Organizers asked women who cannot afford to miss a day of work to limit their shopping to female-owned businesses or to wear red.

Although women have made some headway against the glass ceiling, State Street said one out of four of the companies that make up the Russell 3000 Index still have no female representation on their boards.

"Today, we are calling on companies to take concrete steps to increase gender diversity on their boards, and have issued clear guidance to help them begin to take action," State Street Global Advisors CEO Ron O'Hanley said in a statement.

Much the same as the charging bull, the little bronze girl by artist Kristen Visbal was put up in the wee hours of the morning as "guerilla art," McNally said. But, unlike the bull, the firm discussed it with the city beforehand so that it could remain at least temporarily.

"We're actively pursuing that it stays for a month," she said. "If the city decides that it should stay in perpetuity, we're absolutely on board with that."

The bull, sculpted by Italian-born artist Arturo Di Modica, was initially taken down after he quietly placed it in front of the New York Stock Exchange in December 1989. But it was later given a permanent home, about a five-minute walk away on Broadway, in response to public support.

International Women's Day 2017

International Women's Day 2017

International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women's Day, is celebrated on March 8 every year.In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women for their economic, political and social achievements.
The earliest celebration was held as a Socialist political event in 1909 in New York City. Declared a national holiday in the Soviet Union in 1917, it was predominantly celebrated in socialist and communist countries until it was adopted in 1977 by the United Nations.

History

International Women's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. International Women's Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe.
Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women's movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women's conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women's rights and participation in the political and economic arenas.
Chronology
  • 1909   The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on 28 February. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.
  • 1910   The Socialist International, meeting in Copenhagen, established a Women's Day, international in character, to honour the movement for women's rights and to build support for achieving universal suffrage for women. The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, which included the first three women elected to the Finnish Parliament. No fixed date was selected for the observance.
  • 1911   As a result of the Copenhagen initiative, International Women's Day was marked for the first time (19 March) in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than one million women and men attended rallies. In addition to the right to vote and to hold public office, they demanded women's rights to work, to vocational training and to an end to discrimination on the job.
  • 1913-1914   International Women's Day also became a mechanism for protesting World War I. As part of the peace movement, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February. Elsewhere in Europe, on or around 8 March of the following year, women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with other activists.
  • 1917   Against the backdrop of the war, women in Russia again chose to protest and strike for "Bread and Peace" on the last Sunday in February (which fell on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar). Four days later, the Czar abdicated and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote.
  • 1975 During International Women's Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day on 8 March.
  •
  • 1995 The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a historic roadmap signed by 189 governments, focused on 12 critical areas of concern, and envisioned a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination.
  • 2014 The 58th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW58) – the annual gathering of States to address critical issues related to gender equality and women’s rights — focused on “Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls”. UN entities and accredited NGOs from around the world took stock of progress and remaining challenges towards meeting the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs have played an important role in galvanizing attention on and resources for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The world of work is changing fast, through innovation, increasing mobility and informality. But it needs to change faster to empower women, whose work has already driven many of the global gains in recent decades.
Women still predominantly occupy jobs that pay less and provide no benefits. They earn less than men, even as they shoulder the enormous—and economically essential—burden of unpaid care and domestic work.
Realizing women’s economic empowerment requires transformative change so that prosperity is equitably shared and no one is left behind. The international community has made this commitment in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Equal Pay For Women
It doesn’t matter where they work or what they do. Women globally are paid less than men for the same work.
Why does the gender pay gap persist? In many countries, disparities in education have begun to close. But that’s not enough to knock down gender-based discrimination in the world of work. It keeps women out of some jobs and segregates them into others—often the lowest paying ones.
Many constraints stem from balancing paid work and family responsibilities. Inflexible working hours and limited parental leave are among the factors forcing women into part-time employment or even out of the workforce for long stretches. Some countries still mandate women to retire earlier than men.
What can we do? Call for passing and enforcing laws and regulations upholding the principle of equal pay for work of equal value. Ensure that businesses do their part to close the gender pay gap.
Share Unpaid Care
Women make a huge economic contribution that fills gaps in services. Why is it unshared and uncounted?
Cooking, cleaning, caring for children and the elderly—economies depend on such work, valued at between 10 and 39 per cent of GDP. It can contribute more to an economy than manufacturing or commerce.
Unpaid care and domestic work fills gaps in public services and infrastructure—and are largely provided by women. That’s
an unfair burden and an unfair barrier to equal labour force participation and pay. Reducing these requires shifting norms around who does this work, and investing in decent, paid work in the care economy.
What can we do? Pass policies that reduce and redistribute unpaid work, such as through more paid jobs in the care economy, and encourage men to share care and domestic work. Invest in systems to provide water, electricity, transportation and other essentials that reduce household labour.
